Open Water Diver FAQ
FAQ:
How much does it cost?
The confined water portion of our PADI Open Water Scuba Diver course costs $300. This covers your pool dives, classroom sessions and materials, and necessary SCUBA equipment during the pool sessions. Students also need SCUBA quality mask, snorkel and fins. Both Motor City Scuba & Scuba and Snorkel Center provide a student discount towards the purchase of these items. Divers can expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $300.
Additionally, to become certified divers the open water certification dives must be successfully completed. A student diver has one year from the end of their course to conduct these dives. Students can do these dives anywhere in the world; price will vary. Both Motor City Scuba & Scuba and Snorkel Center offers these dives every month during the summer. The cost of these dives is $180 (includes the use of scuba equipment).
Do I have to be a good swimmer?
You need to be comfortable in the water and demonstrate basic swimming ability. We will conduct two assessments of your swimming ability. You will need to be able to stay afloat or tread water for 10 minutes and be able to swim 300 yards with your mask, snorkel and fins.
Do I need a sports physical to participate in training?
No, but you will fill out a medical statement prior to any scuba activity. Based on your responses to this medical statement, we may ask that you discuss diving with your physician and get his/her approval. This form is provided in the PADI Crewpack and you can download it here (Useful Forms).
Will my ears hurt?
Nope. Divers learn to equalize their ears. Learn more about equalizing your ears.
At what age can you take the PADI Open Water Course?
The minimum age for this course is 18 years old (12 with guardian approval, 10 with guardian’s active participation). Children under 16 should be accompanied by a guardian for all training. Some course options will have other age requirements – ask any team member for details.
